The worst thing any major metropolitan town's tourism department wants to hear about are 600 to 800 reports of human poop and/or pee on public sidewalks per month, yet that's precisely what San Francisco faces, claims the town's Department of Public Works. Hyphae Design Laboratory out of Oakland intends to clean up the issue, though. They'll soon set up eco-friendly “pooplets” to address the staggering lack of community toilets the homeless can use. That should help keep areas tidier. Pooplets will automatically separate solid and liquid waste, which reduces odor and makes the composting process more efficient. Law enforcement will be able to decide whether illegal activity is taking place in the pooplets or not very easily with translucent walls. That means there really isn’t security with the pooplets. That is something critics have difficulty with.

The area will have to pay $40,000 to 50,000 for each of the pooplets, according to the Bay Citizen. The first pooplets should be accessible before the 2013 America’s Cup yacht races occur, and they will be free. By spring 2012, the first model will be ready. It is unknown if the average person will be willing to use small toilets with translucent walls or not.

Cause of nasty streets

The homeless in San Francisco end up defecating on the street because there are companies closed early in the morning and late at night. A SF Public Press investigation found that this was an enormous reason as to why the roads are so bad. Usually, you cannot use the restroom unless you buy something too at these companies.

"The only way to find a restroom before 7 a.m. is to buy yourself a cup of coffee at Starbucks,” unemployed contractor Jim Rokas told the Community Press.

Having the restroom technology reinvented

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WN2x2FiNMpM

Information from

The Bay Citizen: http://www.baycitizen.org/columns/scott-james/plan-eco-public-toilets-parking-spaces/

Huffington Post: http://huff.to/pftOsl

Hyphae Design Laboratory: http://hyphae.net/journal/

San Francisco Chronicle: http://bit.ly/nNXEfG

SF Clean City: http://www.sfcleancity.com/

SF Public Press: http://bit.ly/gmVGsh
|
